Virtual Lab

We finished our study on controlling variables with a virtual lab on Thursday and Friday.  We bounced a basketball from different heights and with different psi to see the effect on the height of each bounce. We know that you can only test ONE of those things at a time or it doesn't work.

Exclusive Interview.... Take it outside!

During writing class we went outside to interview a classmate.  What a great way to enjoy the fresh air, learn about our classmates, and practice writing like a journalist, all at the same time.

Mr. Steve Songs

Thursday morning, Mr. Steve came for an assembly at Nottingham.  He had students on their feet dancing and singing along.  We all enjoyed the show. Everyone loved his scary story he told about the Lillian monster in the dark Colman forest, with the only light coming from the waxing Gibson moon.  I guess you had to be there.  You can see Mr. Steve perform this weekend in the Washington Mall in the PBS tent. http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/

Morning Meeting

We learned how to play "A Warm Wind Blows" during morning meeting.  Everyone sits in a circle with a chair, except for one person.  Then, the person in the middle says "A warm wind blows for everyone that.... " and fills in the ending.  For example, "A warm wind blows for everyone that has been to Chicago." Then everyone who HAS, stands up and switches seats.  One person will be left without a seat, and they start the next topic.  We learned about our classmates and realized we have alot in common.

Observations vs. Inferences

Mrs. McFerran ate WHAT???
Yesterday, the fifth graders learned that an observation must be based on evidence and that an inference combines what we observe with our background knowledge.  Students made an inference that Mrs. McFerran was holding a lit candle based on past experiences.  What a reaction when she ATE it.
